Modern Roundabouts have a potential to greatly reduce the number of pedestrains hit by cars in California. They also can reduce auto crash rates and inprove vehicle flow.
- Reduced conflict points for pedestrian crossing.
- Low design speed 17mph improves yeilding of drivers for pedestrians in crosswalk
- Elimination of red light runnning problem
- Reduced number of lanes required for storage at traffic lights
- Intigrates with "Road Diets" allow for reduction of excess traffic lanes
- Blind pedestrians may not be accomodated with current designs (studies being done)
- May not work with higher volume intersections
- Muti-lane Roundabouts not safe for bicycles (Single lane roundabouts prefered for bikes)
